About Abby

Hi, I'm Abby Young.

I've been working with kids for over five years and I'm studying to be a teacher through Massey University. I've recently started private tutoring and I'm now opening up small groups. With the cost of living the way it is, I want to give our tamariki good learning opportunities at a price families can manage.

Why small groups? When I was at primary school, I went to two tutors who ran group sessions from their home. I could catch up on things I was behind in and get ahead on others. I learned formal writing and long division there a year before we covered them in school.

When those topics came up at school, they felt easy, while a lot of my friends struggled. It's hard to get one-on-one time in a big class. A small group gives every child time to ask questions and be heard.

That's the kind of learning I want to give your child.

How a session works

One hour, start to finish

Every session follows the same routine, so kids know what to expect and settle in quickly.

  1. 10 min before

    Drop-off

Shoes off at the door and a quick hello to the dogs. Activities like colouring are provided while waiting.

  2. First few minutes

    Afternoon tea

Water and a snack pack to refuel after school.

  3. Most of the hour

    Learn together

Small-group teaching in maths or literacy, matched to your child's year level.

  4. To finish

    Homework set

A short task to practise at home before next week. Answers are also sent home so parents can check and stay involved.

  5. Within 10 min

    Pick-up

Please collect your child within 10 minutes of the session ending.

  6. Every session

    Log book provided

So you can see what we've done in class and what's for homework.

Meet the household

The 2 Goldies and the 3 cats

Sessions happen in our family home, which we share with two elderly, very friendly golden retrievers and three cats who mostly mind their own business. It's their home too, so we ask everyone to treat them kindly.

If your child is nervous around animals or has a pet allergy, let me know on the enrolment form and we'll work something out.

Safety and wellbeing

Your child's safety comes first

You're trusting me with your child, and I take that seriously.

How I keep kids safe

  • I hold a current First Aid certificate.
  • Students only use the lounge, dining area and bathroom.
  • Groups are small, so every child is supervised the whole time.
  • Allergies, dietary needs and medical needs are recorded at enrolment.
  • I talk with parents and caregivers directly about anything to do with your child.

Children's rights

My teaching is guided by children's rights in New Zealand, based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

  • Every child, without exceptionAll children are welcome, whatever their background, language or ability. (Article 2)
  • Best interests firstYour child's best interests guide every decision I make. (Article 3)
  • Room to growEvery child deserves the chance to reach their full potential. (Article 6)
  • A voice that's heardKids are encouraged to share their ideas and opinions, and I listen. (Article 12)

Our house agreement

When you sign up, we agree to…

  • Respect the home, furniture, people and pets
  • Take shoes off inside
  • Stay in the lounge, dining area and bathroom
  • Drop off no earlier than 10 minutes before class
  • Pick up within 10 minutes of class finishing
  • Let Abby know early about absences

Good tutoring works best as a partnership between tutor, student and parents. If the agreement isn't kept, it can affect how well lessons work for everyone, and I may need to stop sessions for that student.

Questions

Parents often ask

Can we meet you before signing up?

Yes, please do. I offer a free meet-and-greet so you and your child can see the space, meet me (and the dogs), and ask any questions before you commit.

How will I know how my child is going?

Each term I'll send you a short progress update covering what we've worked on, where your child has grown, and what we'll focus on next. You're welcome to ask me how things are going at pick-up any time. Additionally, a log book is signed with what we did in the lesson and what's assigned for homework, to keep you in the loop.

Where exactly are sessions held?

At my home in Kelvin Grove, Palmerston North. I'll send the full address when we arrange your meet-and-greet or confirm your enrolment.

My child isn't in Years 4 to 6. Can they still come?

Possibly. I'm open to other year levels, days and times if there's enough interest. Get in touch and I'll add you to the list. For now, yes, under specific circumstances: if your child isn't in Years 4 to 6 but is working at that level. For example, a Year 3 who is ahead and needs a challenge, or a Year 7 who needs to catch up.

Is it for kids who are behind, or kids who want to get ahead?

Both. Small groups mean I can help a child catch up on a tricky concept or stretch them further, depending on what they need.

What's for afternoon tea?

Water and a snack pack of biscuits or chips. Tell me about any allergies or dietary needs and I'll provide something suitable.

How long do I sign up for?

I generally take bookings for the primary school term, which tends to be between 9 and 12 weeks.

What happens if we miss a session?

There's no charge for sickness or medical reasons, and every student gets two free absences a year. I'm happy to arrange a catch-up lesson (same price as a normal lesson, $35), or I could refund you the $35 if you have paid in advance.

Do sessions run in the school holidays?

Yes, through the regular term breaks. There are no sessions over Easter or Christmas. This summer, there are no lessons from 17 December 2026 to 25 January 2027.
